Why Langham Continues to Invest in the Future of Pharmaceutical Logistics

AUTHOR

Building for What Comes Next

At Langham Logistics, we’ve always believed that if you build for where the market is going, you’ll be ready when your customers need you.

That philosophy has shaped our business for nearly four decades. Long before cold chain became one of the fastest-growing segments of pharmaceutical logistics, we recognized that temperature-controlled supply chains would become increasingly important as therapies evolved and manufacturers demanded more specialized logistics partners.

Today, that vision is reflected in our newest pharmaceutical facility in Plainfield, Indiana.

Designed specifically for pharmaceutical and life sciences customers, the facility is home to what Founder and CEO Cathy Langham describes as the largest pharmaceutical-grade 2°–8°C cooler environment in the United States. More than simply adding warehouse space, the facility represents our continued investment in helping pharmaceutical companies navigate an increasingly complex supply chain.

Investing Ahead of Demand

The pharmaceutical industry is changing rapidly.

Biologics, gene therapies, vaccines, and GLP-1 medications have dramatically increased the demand for specialized cold-chain logistics. Industry forecasts suggest that specialty medicines will account for the majority of new drug launches in the coming years, with many requiring refrigerated storage throughout the supply chain.

Rather than waiting for demand to arrive, we’ve continued investing in the infrastructure needed to support these products.

Our Plainfield facility was designed specifically around pharmaceutical operations.

From sealed loading docks that help maintain temperature integrity to climate-controlled forklifts, real-time environmental monitoring, automated inventory management, and redundant backup power systems, every aspect of the building was designed to help protect product quality while supporting operational efficiency.

As Cathy explained:

“We’re always looking for what’s next.”

More Than Square Footage

While the size of the facility often gets attention, what matters most is what it enables.

Our customers rely on us to provide compliant, scalable pharmaceutical logistics that can adapt as their businesses grow. The Plainfield operation expands our ability to support temperature-controlled warehousing, transportation, distribution, and other specialized pharmaceutical services while maintaining the quality standards our customers expect.

Perhaps most importantly, it gives customers confidence that capacity will be available when they need it.

“It’s just going to be a continued need in the market,” Cathy told the Indianapolis Business Journal. “These pharma companies, as they continue to grow, will be fighting each other for space and raw materials, and they want nothing more than for a company like mine to say, ‘We promise we will have space for you when you need it.'”

Looking Ahead

The Plainfield facility is one milestone in a much larger journey.

Langham currently operates pharmaceutical and life sciences facilities across Indiana, Pennsylvania, and Arizona, with additional expansion planned in key life sciences markets as demand continues to grow.

The next chapter is already underway.

Langham is expanding into North Carolina’s Research Triangle Park, one of the nation’s premier life sciences and biotechnology hubs. As pharmaceutical manufacturing and research continue to grow throughout the region, the new facility will extend Langham’s pharmaceutical logistics network into another critical market while providing customers with additional capacity and strategic geographic reach.

Our commitment remains the same as it has been since 1988: anticipate what’s next, invest ahead of demand, and help our customers move life-changing products safely, reliably, and compliantly.

Because in pharmaceutical logistics, being ready before you’re needed isn’t just good business. It’s essential.
